30,000 disabled people face identity theft

30,000 recipients of the ILF (Independent Living Fund) have had sensitive personal information, including National Insurance Numbers and addresses stolen.
The incident occurred when a Data Storage Transfer Contractor had his vehicle raided in September last year.

Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary David Laws MP said:

“This is a government which has presided over the identify theft of 13,000 Tax Credit Office Employers, the leaking of 30,000 junior doctors’ police records and sexual preferences and now we discover that 30,000 people claiming Independent Living Funds have had their details stolen”

In response, Minister for Disabled People Anne McGuire MP said:

“Following the incident last year, the trustees of the ILF’s immediately instigated a full end-to-end review of IT security, as a precautionary measure. This review was carried out in consultation with experts in the field of IT and data security”
