Carter: a view from the bar
On the morning of 21 June, I was assisted in my customary stroll across the concourse at Waterloo station by a young woman barrister - I didn't ask her name, but she is in chambers at 23 Essex Street, London.
I mentioned the Carter reforms. She commented that the Law Society was making a considerable fuss, but that the criminal bar was not so worried.
This was the day before the gutter press lighted on the fact that ten barristers were, between them, receiving £4,000,000 in fees for legal aid work, for one year.
I must say that, throughout the discussions about the Carter reforms, the Bar Council seems to have been the dog which didn't bark.
